28.10.2004 India’s communications and IT minister, Dayanidhi Maran, is soon announce a policy for .in domain registration in the country. The policy aims to promote websites with generic .in domain name as part of the website’s address. The National Internet Exchange of India is expected to be the administrative body for registration.

27.10.2004 Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is going to appoint a consulting firm to propose a set of guidelines for satellite broadcasting in India. Satellite broadcasting services in India provide their services without any government intervention in absence of any licensing procedure.

26.10.2004 A recently concluded meeting convened by the World Trade Organization has discussed the nature of non tariff barriers in global trade of information technology products and services. Initiated by WTO and endorsed by 63 member coutries, the Information Technology Agreement, aims to remove trade barriers in IT sector.

11.10.2004 As the Asian regional consultation for WSIS opens in 11 to 13 October in Bangkok, representatives of government, civil society and private institutions will discuss the regional and national implementations of the outcomes of the first phase of the WSIS and the preparation of the draft Regional Plan of Action for the next phase of the summit. UNESCAP, the leading agency for this dialogue plans to initiate four sub-regional discussions in Central Asia, Pacific, South-Asia and South-east Asia to strengthen the final input to the process.

08.10.2004 UNDP administrator Mark Malloch Brown will chair the Task Force on Financial Mechanisms to review the issues of funding ICT-led initiatives in developing countries. This newly-formed Task Force is expected to solicit recommendations for the second phase of WSIS on the issue of financing initiatives towards bridging the digital divide.

01.10.2004 The South African Free Market Foundation has criticised the country’s Convergence Bill, calling it as an attempt to unnecessarily license all kinds of communication activities. The Foundation fears that too much legislation will encourage the use of political power and corruption.
