For rural populace who could not buy mobile phones due to power shortage, a new system has been launched in Uganda that enables people to charge phones by using a bicycle. The system can charge eight phones per hour by riding a bicycle.

A Kenyan company has launched a project called Digital Village Constituency Cluster geared to expand the countrys ICT reach to connect the rural population. Each cluster will have minimum of eight digital units serving commercial, developmental and educational activities within a 15 km radius.
