28.12.2004 As the death toll in India reaches nearly 7000 people today after the tsunami waves hit its coastal areas on Sunday night, India has decided to join the International Coordination Group for the Tsunami Warning System. By joining the Group, India will be able to exchange information on such disasters through this network that predicts tsunamis up to 14 hours in advance.

28.12.2004 Installation of tidal gauges would have saved lives from the recent tsunami disaster, said U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Waverly Person in an interview recently. Such warning system alerts people near the coastal area about the impending tsunami giving them enough time to move off the beach.

27.12.2004 Several participants supported a proposal inviting UNCTAD to play a leadership role in the global debate in the digital divide and internet governance in a recent UNCTAD consultation with civil society and private sector representatives. It is recommended that UNCTAD should devise a proposal for a special drawing rights system (SDR) in support of the global solidarity fund to help bridge the digital divide.
