The United Nations Development Programme, the Afghanistan Ministry of Communication, and the French government have launched a pilot programme to set up nine telekiosks in Afghanistan capital Kabul. The kiosks will help city’s people, particularly teachers and children, government employees and health workers, to access information and make links to government ministries and fellow citizens.

A new information and communications centre was recently opened in Armenian capital Yerevan as part of the country’s efforts to boost access to the Internet and e-governance. The centre, which has 38 workstations and can accommodate 600 users a day, will promote ICT through research and training programmes, and public discussions, and will serve as a hub for Freenet public access sites being established in many regions.

The use of information and communication technology (ICT) to improve reporting on HIV/AIDS in Asia was the main focus of a workshop that was held recently in Chennai, India. This week-long meeting coincided with the 4th International Conference on AIDS in India and brought together 18 women media professionals from Bangladesh, India, Mongolia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka.
