Hundreds of Muslim women from across India, along with academics, social experts and parliamentarians, addressed social, livelihood, legal and religious issues of the community at the first annual convention of Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA) in Delhi. The campaign also called for the implementation of the 2006 Justice Sachar Committee report for better education and employment facilities.

Universal Library project has now digitised more than 1.5 million published books in 20 different languages of the world and continues to scan thousands more daily. All these books in Chinese, English, Arabic, Telugu, etc. are now available on internet – free of cost.

The United Nations has officially launched 2008 as the International Year of Sanitation to highlight the need for global investments in sanitation. About 42,000 people die every week from diseases caused by poor drinking water and the lack of toilets, while also being denied dignity, privacy, and in case of women – safety too.

A two-day Sub-Regional Conference in support of Global Literacy organised by the UNESCO will be held from November 29 at New Delhi. The First Ladies of 10 countries — Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan — have been invited to attend.

The second Internet Governance Forum that opened at Rio de Janeiro discussed ways to use the Internet for development, among other critical issues. The four-day event is being promoted by the United Nations and will be attended by over thousand participants from the governments, private sector, NGOs, academics and the technical communities.

Give One Get One (G1G1) campaign starting this week hopes to boost orders by providing an incentive to people in more prosperous countries. For every laptop donated for a child, the donor would get one in return. The campaign is backed by Google, Intel, eBay, News Corp and Advance Micro Devices.
