Kehitysyhteistyövaikuttajat keskustelivat Helsingissä politiikan johdonmukaisuudesta: köyhyyttä ei poisteta yksin kehitysavulla, vaan siihen tarvitaan myös muiden politiikkalohkojen panos. Kepan uutisen mukaan pienten järjestöjen edustajat voivat parhaiten vaikuttaa eri politiikan alojen johdonmukaisuuteen käyttämällä äänioikeuttaan.

Pratham’s learning centres involving balawadi, balasakhi and bridge courses have caught the imagination of the children living in the slums of Mysore. The play way methods using low cost toys and learning tools made out of industrial waste has made learning more exciting.

SARANDEEP Kaur, 6, is a small girl with a huge smile. Dressed in an oversized blue salwar-kameez, she turns a deep shade of pink as she reads out two stories, and does three formidable additions and subtractions. Six months ago, this class II girl of Govt Primary School at Kamalu village could not even recognise alphabets, and the less said the better about arithmetic.

The acceptance of childhood as a protected and privileged period of life was simultaneous to the rise of the modern welfare state, and predates by several decades the discourse of globalisation. However, the ubiquitous tools of globalisation, such as the internet and tourism have currently induced a weakening of the welfare state and dissolution of earlier existing “protective” barriers wherein the teacher and the learning system mediated between the child and the outer world.

YK kehotti hallituksia ryhtymään mittaviin toimenpiteisiin, jottei slummien asukasmäärä kaksinkertaistuisi seuraavien 30 vuoden aikana.

Child Domestic Labour remains on the fringes of child labour, far from the glare of international action… a hidden phenomenon. Child domestic labour is a widespread and growing global phenomenon that traps as many as ten million children or more - mostly girls - in hidden forms of exploitation, often involving abuse, health risks and violence.
