The mid-point to the 2015 deadline, 07.07.07, for meeting the Millennium Development Goals is just around the corner. NGOs worldwide are gearing up to press governments for faster action. In India, the UN Millennium Campaign and other civil society organizations are pushing the ruling UPA government to meet the MDG targets.

In the resolution (2006/46) passed on 28 July 2006, entitled “Follow-up to the World Summit on the Information Society and review of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development”, ECOSOC indicated how it will oversee the system-wide follow-up of the Summit outcomes, as requested in the Tunis outputs. This is in the context of the annual consideration by ECOSOC of the integrated and coordinated implementation and follow-up of major United Nations conferences.

WASHINGTON, Jun 21 (IPS) - Environmental campaigners are urging several heavyweight investment firms, including Credit Suisse, Barclays, Fortis Group and Merrill Lynch, to shoulder some responsibility for a catastrophic mud volcano on the Indonesian island of Java that resulted from a gas project the firms helped fund.

L’incontro servirà a fare un punto sugli Obiettivi del Millennio e l’impegno dell’Italia per il loro raggiungimento e sarà anche l’occasione per inaugurare la Mostra del Millennio “Dammi un…zero, sette!!!” allestita in questi giorni a a Roma.

"E’ forte la sensazione che l’Italia stia frenando la formulazione di un accordo finale che includa impegni quantitativi precisi sulle risorse destinate alla lotta alla povertà". E' il commento di Luca De Fraia di ActionAid e della Coalizione Italiana contro la Povertà (GCAP) presenti all’incontro col Presidente del Consiglio Prodi avvenuto ieri a Palazzo Chigi. "L’Italia rischia di presentarsi a mani vuote al Summit dei G8, in particolar modo per quello che riguarda il Fondo Globale per la lotta all’Aids, rinviando ogni impegno al prossimo Dpef". Intanto Vittorio Agnoletto, eurodeputato della Sinistra europea, afferma che il G8 può subito prendere "due decisioni: versare i contributi promessi al Fondo globale per la lotta all’AIDS, Tbc e malaria e impegnarsi per la modifica in sede WTO delle regole internazionali sui brevetti che, impedendo la creazione di un mercato internazionale di farmaci generici, condannano a morte milioni di persone ogni anno.

Uudessa raportissaan Amnesty vaatii Israelia palauttamaan palestiinalaisille täyden liikkumisvapauden Länsirannalla. Liikkumisrajoitukset ovat lamaannuttaneet alueen talouskehityksen ja lisänneet köyhyyttä, raportissa todetaan.
