The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act has run into a roadblock with the Centre deciding to cut down the minimum wages.A few days ago, after analysing the average payments to workers employed under the EGA, the Centre decided to fix a uniform wage rate of Rs 60.

The elements of global monitoringexamined in detail in the report include poverty and malnutrition; human development outcomes; meeting commitments on aid, trade, and debt relief; performance of international financial institutions; governance in developing countries; and global checks and balances to strengthen governance. |

Indian NGO Navdanya has said that the package announced by the Indian government to prevent farmers's suicides - that seeks to increase the flow of credit into rural areas - will only lead to more frustration and suicides among farmers. Navdanya's assumption is based on the fact that capital intensive agriculture is pushing farmers into debt and suicides.

Earlier this year, the Indian government launched a bold, multi-million dollar scheme to tackle rural poverty. It guarantees 100 days work a year for every rural household. It's manual work at the minimum wage.
