Maailman slummeissa asuu jo miljardi ihmistä. Vailla peruspalveluita ja maanomistusoikeutta köyhälistökortteleiden ihmiset joutuvat usein paikallisten koronkiskureiden hampaisiin. YK suunnittelee lainarahastoa helpottamaan slummiasukkaiden talonrakennusta.

NEW YORK, Apr 20 (OneWorld) - Renowned primatologist Jane Goodall joined corporate executives this week to launch a new line of "chimp-friendly" coffee, designed to open consumers' eyes to environmental degradation in western Tanzania and the steep toll it's taking on chimpanzees and humans alike.

The findings of the survey done by WHO in six states of India, distinctly states that health costs are out of the reach of the poor and made them more vulnerable to ill-health. In fact for many, poverty has been exacerbated due to debt and selling of assets for the meeting of health expenses.

Äärimmäisessä köyhyydessä elävien määrä putosi vuodesta 1990 noin viidenneksellä vuoteen 2004 mennessä, ja alle dollarilla elää nykyisin noin 985 miljoonaa ihmistä. Maailmanpankin raportti muistuttaa kuitenkin, että lähes puolet kehitysmaiden väestöstä - noin 2,6 miljardia ihmistä - eli vuonna 2004 alle kahdella dollarilla päivässä.

Balraj Puri from the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) says that terrorism in the north Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir has dwarfed the human rights of orphans, widows, handicapped, weaker sections, displaced persons and many others. He says that it is a high time that people took notice of these rights also.

A new form of bondage has been found in the south Indian state Tamil Nadu where textile units under the Sumangali Scheme or the Marriage Assistance Scheme are hiring adolescent girls and forcing them in bonded labour.

Reacting to the IPCC report on climate change, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said that the impacts of climate change are increasingly noticeable, and likely to become more so in the future as extreme weather events intensify. He also urged countries to work on mitigating the worst effects of climate change.
