President Pervez Musharraf in a televised address has said that he intends to lift the emergency on December 16 and urged all to participate in elections scheduled to take place on January 8, 2008. Some political parties in Pakistan plan to boycott the elections, fearing that they would not be fair and transparent.

La scorsa settimana, in occasione del 18esimo anniversario della convenzione Onu sui Diritti del Bambino si è tenuta in diversi paesi dell'America Latina una grande mobilitazione dei movimenti sociali per i diritti dell'infanzia. "Noi bambini esigiamo di vivere senza la guerra!", "Esigiamo il diritto al lavoro in condizioni dignitose per i bambini e adolescenti lavoratori NATs". Sono alcuni titoli dei manifesti colorati e degli slogan gridati in Piazza Bolivar a Bogotà, davanti al Parlamento, da un centinaio di bambini e adolescenti che si sono riuniti a livello nazionale. "Come a Bogotà anche a Lima (Perù), a Ciudad del Este (Paraguay) e a Cordoba (Argentina) i movimenti sociali NATs (Niños y Adolescentes Trabajadores) dell’America Latina hanno organizzato varie iniziative e manifestazioni in tutto il continente grazie anche alla cooperazione italiana" - riporta Cristiano Morsolin di Selvas.org.

Finally bowing to the pressures from domestic quarters and international community, Gen Pervez Musharraf has stepped down as Pakistan’s army chief. He handed over the charge to his trusted deputy Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kavani in a ceremony held in Rawalpindi.

Around 15 organisations, on November 27, held a silent protest at New Delhi’s cultural hub Mandi House in support of Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen, who has been in exile since 1994. Living in eastern Indian city of Kolkata since 2003, she had to recently move out when under pressure from Muslim fundamentalists, the West Bengal government forced her to leave at once.

A new internet campaign has been launched by UNIFEM aiming at elimination of all forms of violence against women. Actress Nicole Kidman kicking off the campaign, urged all to put an end to this appalling human rights violation. Every third woman in the world suffers from violence and abuse in her lifetime.

The national platform for Dalit organizations in India, NACDOR, will hold its second national conference from December 5-8, 2007 in New Delhi. Over a thousand Dalit organizations will participate at NACDOR-II to finalise a comprehensive Dalit agenda, while tackling current challenges to the marginalized communities.

"Nonostante una diminuzione generale dell’intensità e della frequenza dei conflitti nel distretto dell’Ituri nell’est della Repubblica Democratica del Congo (RdC), la popolazione civile continua a subire livelli di violenza intollerabili": lo afferma Medici Senza Frontiere (MSF) in un rapporto che testimonia il perdurare delle "atroci violenze sessuali e le conseguenze umanitarie delle operazioni militari condotte nel 2007 nell’ambito del 'processo di pacificazione' nella regione". "Quasi la metà delle violenze sono causate da uomini legati alle forze armate o alle milizie”. In un altro comunicato sempre MSF segnala che nel corso degli ultimi mesi nuove ondate di combattimenti nella provincia del Nord Kivu, nella parte orientale della RdC hanno costretto alla fuga diverse centinaia di migliaia di persone.

A Pakistan based helpline for women and children has released astounding figures of rapes, tortures, killings, honour killings, kidnappings, suicides, etc. It cites more than 4,500 reported cases of abuse against women this year in the country while the figure for the last seven years stands at 55,051.

Pakistan has been slapped with yet another suspension under the same regime from the 53-member Commonwealth. Last time it was in 1999, when Musharraf had seized power in a coup. The recent ban has come in the wake of the imposition of emergency and is to be revoked only after democracy and the rule of law are restored.

An international campaign - 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence kicked off on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The campaign will run till December 10, International Human Rights Day, to emphasize that all forms of violence against women are a violation of human rights.

Marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the United Nations has strongly condemned the violence perpetrated against women globally. Letting tormentors go scot-free and denial of socio-economic rights to women are the factors contributing to the continuance of this scourge.
