The government of Guatemala charges radio stations $28,000 for bandwidth, an inordinate sum for community radio stations that are operated by volunteers and typically have a two-to-five mile broadcast range. Consequently, bandwidth is rapidly being bought up by commercial radio stations that broadcast only in Spanish and do not address themes of concern to the Maya population. The remaining bandwidth is often usurped by wealthy evangelical interest groups.

United Nations special envoy Anna Tibaijuka’s report on Zimbabwe's Operation Murambatsvina has continued to attract heavy media attention. But while the private media in the country have carried fairly investigative and balanced reports on the topic, the government-controlled media’s coverage is rigid, characterised by shrill defence of government’s implementation of Murambatsvina while simultaneously parading the clampdown’s mop-up successor, Operation Garikai, as a worthy programme.
