The government of Guatemala charges radio stations $28,000 for bandwidth, an inordinate sum for community radio stations that are operated by volunteers and typically have a two-to-five mile broadcast range. Consequently, bandwidth is rapidly being bought up by commercial radio stations that broadcast only in Spanish and do not address themes of concern to the Maya population. The remaining bandwidth is often usurped by wealthy evangelical interest groups.

On Friday, 1 July, a one-day day debate was held at UNESCO on the subject of “Islam, media and public opinion”. The event was organized by the Islam and Laicism Commission in France, the French League for Human Rights, the Ligue de l’Enseignement and Le Monde Diplomatique, in cooperation with UNESCO and the French National Commission for UNESCO.

Transparency International Hrvatska pozdravlja presudu Upravnog suda kojom je uvažena tužba u korist novinarke Jelene Berković protiv predsjednika Vlade zbog kršenja prava na pristup informacijama. Svaka odgovorna javna vlast mora omogućiti svim svojim građanima, ne samo novinarima, pristup svim informacijama o svom radu, a sudovi su dužni zaštititi građane ako im to pravo nije omogućeno.

Internet traffic on the African continent will soon be travelling shorter — and, therefore, cheaper — routes. Transtel, one of the largest private telecommunication network operators in the southern hemisphere and a division of Transnet Limited was a successful bidder. The other was a joint bid from Africa Online, a pan-African ISP, and Sky Vision, a leading provider of international Internet services over satellite and terrestrial fibre optic systems.

Five journalists have gone to Africa to build the capacity of local media to report on human rights issues through the Young Professionals International (YPI) program of Foreign Affairs Canada (FAC). Through this program, the young Canadians will be in Nigeria, Uganda and Sierra Leone, and Ghana until March 15, 2006. On the ground, the participants will work for a media company or local media NGO for eight months. Their main task will be to develop and implement activities to train local journalists to report more effectively on human rights issues.
