"Let me describe the scene on the ground here in 'liberated' Iraq. With the 'elections' just three days away, people are terrified. Families are fleeing Baghdad much as they did prior to the invasion of the country...huge lines of cars are stacked up at checkpoints on the outer edges of the city. Policemen and Iraqi soldiers are trying to convince people to stay in the city and vote. Nobody is listening to them."

La comunicación es uno de los ejes temáticos que serán debatidos en el V Foro Social Mundial (FSM), que tendrá lugar esta semana en Porto Alegre, Brasil. ALAI participa en la organización de eventos sobre este tema, aportando con propuestas, cuya premisa central es la necesidad de construir una agenda social en torno a la democratización de la comunicación. Modificar la actual concentración de poder en el sector de la comunicación, solo será factible con el compromiso y la activa participación de una amplia gama de movimientos sociales a escala planetaria.

Il Gruppo Nonviolenza di Rete di Lilliput e Articolo11 (Presidio permanente davanti a Palazzo Chigi per il ritiro delle truppe dall'Iraq) segnala la necessità di aderire all'appello e ad attivarsi per fermare l'approvazione alla Camera della delega per la revisione delle leggi penali militari (di pace e di guerra), recentemente approvata al Senato. L'approvazione della delega comporterebbe, fra l'altro, che in paesi dove i militari italiani sono presenti, ad esempio in Iraq, il Codice Penale Militare di Guerra verrebbe applicato anche per i civili (ad esempio volontari di ONG in missione umanitaria e giornalisti), con grosse ricadute in tema di libertà di informazione.

Il Presidente della Corte Europea, Bo Versterdorf, ha rigettato l'appello di Microsoft per ritardare l'applicazione delle sanzioni. Microsoft è stata obbligata dalla Commissione Europea a pubblicare le informazioni tecniche delle interfacce del loro sistema operativo Windows per permettere ai propri concorrenti di raggiungere l'interoperabilità tra i loro sistemi e Windows stesso. Intanto con il proprio veto, la Polonia ha bloccato l'approvazione finale della direttiva sui brevetti software in Consiglio Europeo. "Questo significa che la direttiva dovrà essere discussa nuovamente al Consiglio" - comunica la Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE).

Dans la province d'Aceh, en Indonésie, l'une des zones les plus durement frappées par le tsunami qui a dévasté les communautés côtières de l'Asie du Sud, les journalistes et le personnel de soutien du « Serambi Indonesia » refusent de succomber à la tragédie. En dépit de la mort de la moitié des employés, le journal - unique quotidien indépendant de l'Aceh - continue à paraître, selon ce que rapporte l' Association mondiale des journaux (AMJ).
