In September, novelist André Alexis withdrew from jury duty for the Governor General’s Award for fiction, after signing a declaration of conflict of interest. Catherine Bush—with whom Alexis is “involved,” had a novel eligible for the award. Though the situation was not handled as well as it might have been, clearly, there was a cut-and-dried conflict of interest. The question is, would the Canada Council have done anything about the situation had Alexis not volunteered to step down?

Andhra Pradesh is in the midst of an agrarian emergency. The tragic farmersÂ’ suicides are, finally, an extreme symptom of a much deeper rural distress. The result of a decade-long onslaught on the livelihoods of millions. The crisis now goes way beyond the families ravaged by the suicides. And beyond the farming community itself. There is an urgent need to end the suicides. But doing so without addressing the larger distress is to try and mop the floor dry with the taps open.
