Con l'istitituzione del "Giorno del ricordo", in memoria delle vittime delle foibe e dell'esodo giuliano dalmata, in Italia - dopo anni di colpevole rimozione - sembra farsi strada l'affermazione di un'altrettanto fuorviante memoria selettiva sulle vicende del confine orientale. L'Osservatorio sui Balcani dedica un'ampio dossier alla questione delle foibe e alla "Giornata della memoria", nonché alle reazioni nei balcani in seguito alla fiction televisiva italiana "Il cuore nel pozzo". Nonostante non ci siano state reazioni ufficiali dei governi, sui quotidiani sloveni e croati si aperto infatti un ampio dibattito sulla questione di cui il dossier fa il punto. Tra gli altri un intervento del noto scrittore di Mostar, Predrag Matvejevic, e un'intervista a Alberto Negrin, regista de "Il cuore nel pozzo" che replica alle accuse rivoltegli.

Joulukuun 2002 presidentinvaaleissa Mwai Kibaki löi Keniaa 24 vuotta hallinneen Daniel arap Moin, jonka hallinto oli pahamaineisen korruptoitunut. Kibaki perustikin heti valtakautensa alussa presidentinvirastoon erityisen eettisen hallinnon pysyvän sihteerin viran. Nyt korruption vastaisen taistelun johtaja on eronnut turhautuneena tehtävästään.

Aktuelna poseta Borisa Tadića, srpskog predsednika Kosovu pokazala je veoma jasno koliko se percepcija Kosova od strane "starih neprijatelja" razlikuje od nove kosovske realnosti. Dok je Tadić obilazio srpske enklave na Kosovu dreći srpsku zastavu i pompezne govore o tome da je "Kosovo deo Srbije i Crne Gore", albanski politički lideri govorili su o implementaciji standarda pre određivanja konačnog statusa Kosova. Istovremeno, aktivisti civilnog drutva protestovali su bacajući pokvarena jaja na objekat u kojem se Tadić sreo sa predstavnicima Ujedinjenih nacija

On the eve of President Bush's inauguration, the companies responsible for exit polling data during the 2004 U.S. presidential election released a report detailing why their results predicted a 5 million vote Kerry victory, despite the candidate's 3 million vote defeat. While the company--and the news media--announced that the exit poll data must have been wrong, the report demonstrates that it couldn't have been, write a pair of U.S. professors who teach statistics and research methodology.

Amnesty International is concerned for the safety of human rights leaders in Nepal, along with hundreds of student activists and members of political parties who have reportedly been arrested since the King seized absolute power on February 1. Pressure from citizens around the world is needed to ensure their safety and the country's return to democracy, the group says.
