According to a new report, sub-Saharan Africa has lost US$272 billion over the past 20 years, which would have been enough to wipe out their debt and pay for every child to be sent to school and vaccinated. These losses have been a direct result of conditions attached to foreign aid, loans and debt relief, which have been imposed upon the countries. The report provides statistics that make it hard to justify trade liberalization, particularly if it is tied to debt relief.

The attorney general's office has refused to release key documents from U.S. Supreme Court nominee John Roberts' time at the Solicitor General's office. Civil rights organizations say the decision hampers the Senate's ability to conduct a full and thorough investigation on Roberts' judicial record and question what if anything the White House has to hide.

A slew of new reports have shed light on 27 years of abuses perpetrated by Afghan warlords, many of whom remain in power today. But the recent conviction of a warlord in a British court could pave the way towards justice for the people of Afghanistan, despite the failures of their own court system, says political commentator Ahmed Rashid.

The man who started one of the longest and most deadly conflicts since World War II was also a unifier and a staunch proponent of equal rights for all. His death leaves a massive hole in Sudan's fragile political fabric, says NGO expert Abdelbagi Jibril, explaining that the country's chances for peace all depend on what happens next.

The recent death of John Garang is a shocking setback to Sudan's peace process, but not a fatal one. The Bush administration deserves much of the credit for the peace deal signed in January, and if it keeps its nerve, can help preserve the peace with Garang’s successor, says Alex De Waal.

Newly-elected president of Iran, Mahmood Ahmadinejad, will be inaugurated Saturday. While all signs point to an increasingly hard-line stance on the resumption of his country's nuclear program, his other domestic and foreign policies may be much more pragmatic than his social conservatism would indicate, says journalist Kamal Nazer Yasin.
