"If every member of the House and Senate had received 100 letters from people back home saying we have to do something about Rwanda, when the crisis was first developing, then I think the response would have been different," said the late Senator Paul Simon. There's still time to make Darfur different.

The senate will likely begin consideration of U.S. Supreme Court nominee John Roberts when it reconvenes September 6. If you agree that it's important to have full information about the candidate before the senate makes its decision, perhaps now is the time to tell your congressperson that--while they're at home for the August recess.

President Bush's decision to bypass the Senate and appoint John Bolton as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations contradicts the American people's desire for integrity and principle at the U.N., said Citizens for Global Solutions Monday, and it will hurt the U.S.'s ability to lead efforts to make the world's top political body more effective.

After months of White House lobbying, the Central American Free Trade Agreement, which Oxfam says will "institutionalize an uneven playing field," was passed in Congress late last week. Although a disappointment to many in the NGO community, many organizations note that the close vote, 217-215, indicates a growing concern for unfair trade agreements.
