The tribals of an east India state, Orissa leave for London to protest at the annual general meeting of mining giant Vedanta about the environmental impact of its proposed aluminium mining and processing plant in the Niyamgiri Hills, which is full of bauxite and other minerals. The plant will severely affect the livelihood and way of life of the tribals.

According to a joint report being released by the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), a combination of prolonged drought,ailstorms, and flooding in the most agriculturally productive areas of Nepal in 2006 and 2007 has severely impacted crop production.

Delhi based NGO PRIA (Participatory Research In Asia) has done a two year study on the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 (NREGA) - a welfare scheme that aims to provide employment to all eligible rural Indian - in 24 districts of 16 Indian states and concluded that the scheme is not working well on the ground. The implementation is not encouraging and the proposed beneficiaries are unaware of the scheme.
