30.11.2004 The unsuccessful, undemocratic and unfair policies imposed on copper-rich Zambia by the IMF and the World Bank have made it one of the poorest countries. The policies include trade liberalisation, removal of legal restrictions on prices, privatization and others.

The 45-play festival also devotes a day to 'women’s theatre' that challenges Islamic fundamentalists who have blocked women's ascent to various aspects of civic life.

27.11.2004 Rwanda's Godeliève Mukasarasi, winner of Rights & Democracy's 2004 John Humphrey Freedom Award, arrived on the weekend to visit Halifax, Moncton, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. The presentation ceremony takes place on the eve of International Human Rights Day. A survivor of the 1994 genocide, Ms. Mukasarasi has gone on to make an invaluable contribution to the promotion of human rights and democratic development in Rwanda.

La capitale de l'Algérie accueille demain une vingtaine de chefs d'Etat et de gouvernement qui vont évaluer l'état d'avancement du NEPAD, lancé il y a trois ans pour sortir l'Afrique du sous-développement, en attirant les investissements étrangers, et en contrepartie d'un engagement des Etats africains à une bonne gouvernance.

23.11.2004 Eveline Herfkens, coordinatrice delle Nazioni Unite per i MDGs (Millenium development goals) dichiara: "Gli Obiettivi del millennio possono essere raggiunti ma all’Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite dell’anno prossimo l'Unione europea deve presentare politiche quantomeno sorprendenti". "I paesi membri dell’Unione europea si sono impegnati a raggiungere - entro il 2006 - almeno lo 0,33% dell’1,7% (del PIL in aiuti allo sviluppo)" - ha dichiarato Herfkens a IPS. "Spero vogliano assumersi un ulteriore impegno, per esempio puntando allo 0,5% entro il 2007 e - perché no - a raggiungere lo 0,7% entro il 2012". Una mossa che "costringerebbe gli Stati Uniti all’autocritica, obbligandoli a seguire le politiche europee".

23.11.2004 Dia 20 de novembro, a Convenção Sobre os Direitos da Criança completa 15 anos de existência. Apesar de todos os países da América Latina terem assinado o tratado internacional – de garantia de direitos a essa população –, a situação dos meninos e meninas da região ainda é de risco social. “Na América Latina 58% das crianças menores de 5 anos são pobres e 190 mil crianças morrem ao ano vítimas de enfermidades ligadas à pobreza”, revelou Bernardo Kliksberg, coordenador geral da Iniciativa Interamericana de Capital Social, Ética e Desenvolvimento do Banco Interamericano de Desenvolvimento (BID). A afirmação foi feita recentemente durante a conferência Porque a ética é importante para o desenvolvimento, organizada pela Banco Central da Venezuela.

"Nel 2004 non c'è più nemmeno un euro" - denuncia Marelli, presidente dell'Associazione delle Ong italiane. Eppure nei giorni scorsi, il ministro per i Rapporti col Parlamento, Carlo Giovanardi aveva sottolineato alla Camera che con il decreto ministeriale del 6 ottobre 2004, il governo italiano avrebbe assicurato i 100 milioni di euro per il Fondo mondiale su Aids, Tbc e malaria.

Rodríguez Zapatero, lleve su compromiso de lucha contra el hambre y la pobreza a las negociaciones de la Organización Mundial del Comercio (OMC). Entre los principales objetivos destaca acabar con la competencia desleal, defender el derecho a la soberanía alimentaria y reformar la Política Agraria Común.
