Lo afferma il rapporto "Blocking Progress" di quattro importanti Ong internazionali che verrà presentato domani a Washington alla vigilia del summit congiunto di BM e FMI. Più di tre milioni di persone sono morte lo scorso anno a causa della malattia, in gran parte nell'Africa sub-sahariana; ma il virus si sta diffondendo rapidamente anche in India, Cina, Russia e nell'Europa orientale.

Stati Uniti e Gran Bretagna intendono proporre al prossimo vertice dei Ministri delle finanze del G7 di ottobre la riduzione del 90% dei 40 miliardi di dollari di debito esterno iracheno dovuto a una ventina di Paesi. Un'iniziativa che darebbe lustro all'amministrazione Bush a sole cinque settimane dal voto negli Usa. Dopo le contrarietà espresse dai Paesi europei, e soprattutto dalla Francia, Usa e UK hanno lanciato una controproposta: cancellarlo ad altri 30 paesi. Favorevoli le ong, che però ricordano che "quando gli elefanti litigano chi ci rimette è l'erba".

Plans by the World Bank to relax its environmental and social requirements when lending money to the private sector must be halted, Friends of the Earth and War on Want demanded today. 120 environment, development and indigenous groups have also written to the World Bank opposing the proposed changes, the details of which were unveiled on Friday. The groups are also unhappy about the consultation process and are threatening to boycott it unless it is changed.
