The environment and its management is a major part of Bhutan’s development plan, and one of the four pillars of Gross National Happiness (GNH). Bhutanese law requires 60 per cent of the country to remain under a green cover. Already, over a quarter of Bhutan’s land has been set aside in the form of protected areas.

Bill Gates addressed health ministers from 192 countries at the World Health Assembly in Geneva Monday, calling for more research to develop solutions for diseases in poorer countries and for market incentives encouraging the private sector to invest in healthcare for the developing world. Gates put his money where his mouth is too, announcing a new $250 million commitment for its Grand Challenges global health research initiative.

En septembre 2005, lors du Sommet du millénaire, cinq ans après des Nations Unies, à New York, les leaders mondiaux se réuniront afin d'évaluer les progrès réalisés pour atteindre les Objectifs du millénaire pour le développement (OMD) fixés en septembre 2000. Compte tenu de l'attention internationale qui sera portée au Sommet et la nécessité pour le Canada de s'affirmer comme un leader mondial en matière de protection des droits de la personne et d'aide internationale, Droits et Démocratie tient une conférence afin de mobiliser tous les acteurs en faveur d'une approche centrée sur les droits humains dans la mise en œuvre des OMD. C'est donc une invitation à venir échanger sur les défis que posent les OMD et à explorer avec nous les possibilités de concrétiser ceux-ci en plaçant les droits humains au cœur de la stratégie d'action mondiale.

A new global campaign--whose symbol is the unmistakable white band worn anywhere on the body--has been launched to coincide with this summer's G8 summit of rich countries, demanding trade justice, debt cancellation, and more and better quality aid for the world's poorest countries.

One of the by-products of the AIDS epidemic sweeping many African nations is the loss of knowledge; for example, with no one to teach them, rural children orphaned at a young age might never learn to farm. But the UN agricultural agency is now taking many of these children under its wings, teaching farming, business, and life skills to ensure another generation is not lost.
