20.10.2006 The ban on employing children in restaurants, roadside eateries, hotels, and tea shops or as domestic labour, announced by the Government in August, has recently come into effect. Those who violate the ban will be fined and also face a prison term up to two years. This is a welcome move focussing on areas where child labour is rampant and where the exploitation of children is shockingly high.

Economic growth might have been spectacular since 1993 — that is, post economic reforms — but it seems to have trickled down rather slowly. A soon-to-be-released official report has estimated that poverty declined by a mere 0.74% during the 11-year period ended 2004-05.

For, the norms put down by a Delhi High Court-appointed committee headed by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) chairman Ashok Ganguly spell out a selection system which is completely in conflict with the Common School System adopted by Bihar which believes in equal access to education.

19.10.2006 All'indomani della grande mobilitazione mondiale "Stand up", che ha visto alzarsi in piedi 23 milioni di persone in tutto il mondo contro la povertà, il Presidente della Repubblica Giorgio Napolitano ha inviato alla Campagna un messaggio nel quale ricorda che "gli Obiettivi del Millennio affermano l’obbligo della realizzazione di elementari diritti umani. Siamo quasi a metà del cammino indicato nell’anno 2000 e la sfida resta ardua. Ci sono segnali incoraggianti - nota il Presidente- ma donatori e beneficiari possono e devono fare di più, nella consapevolezza che è interesse di tutti accelerare le tappe del percorso intrapreso per vincere povertà e sottosviluppo". La coordinatrice esecutiva del Segretario Generale delle Nazioni Unite sugli Obiettivi del Millenno ha sottolineato che "il record che vogliamo realmente stabilire è quello di porre fine alle promesse disattese e all’indifferenza nei confronti della povertà".
