Advocates of social development in the World Bank appear to have won a skirmish with hard-line economists. A large-scale evaluation has concluded that helping countries foster inclusive and cohesive societies with accountable institutions makes development programs more effective and sustainable. "The trickle-down effect does not always produce a positive social impact," points out the Bank's Vice-President for Sustainable Development.

Congo - the other one - lies across a river from the larger and more infamous Democratic Republic of Congo. Last spring, a Médecins Sans Frontières team was finally able to enter Congo's Pool Province. The health of the inhabitants was deplorable. Populations in many towns and villages had shriveled by more than half. Years of violence, extortion, pillaging and rape were clear breaking traditional social structures. A view from David Morley, head of MSF Canada.

Children living in indigenous communities face far greater threats to their survival than other children, according to a new study by the research arm of the UN Children's Fund. Indigenous communities are under economic and cultural stress, and children are less likely to be vaccinated or attend school.
