Mosambikin presidentti Armando Guebuza ja Tansanian presidentti Benjamin Mkapa muurasivat lauantaina maat yhdistävän sillan peruskiven. Rovuma-joen yli rakennettava sillasta on haaveiltu jo kolmekymmentä vuotta.

Tämän vuoksi paikallishallinnon jälleenrakentaminen on äärimmäisen tärkeää.

Suomen Pakolaisapu on kohta kahden vuoden ajan kouluttanut aikuisia lukemaan yhdessä maailman köyhimmistä maista, Sierra Leonessa. Lukutaidolla on valtava merkitys itsetunnon ja tasa-arvon kohottajana. Se muuttaa asenteita. Aiemmin täysin ulkopuolisen avun varassa eläneet ihmiset tarttuvat kehitykseen omatoimisesti.

How would I define empowerment? Empowerment per se means when people are not dependent on others, when they are self-sufficient. There was a time when as children we wrote essays on India’s food problem. There was food shortage at that time. But then came a revolutionary programme and we are now self-sufficient in food and are in fact actually exporting food. You could perhaps call this empowerment.
