30.03.2005 UNITED NATIONS, Mar 29 (IPS) - After a 12-month investigation, a three-member independent committee has cleared U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan of any wrongdoing in the multi-million-dollar, now defunct oil-for-food programme in Iraq.

30.03.2005 The United Nations must ensure that negotiations on international trade in agriculture respect human rights, including the right to adequate food and water. In a statement presented at the UN Commission on Human Rights in Geneva, a coalition (including Rights & Democracy) points to UN estimates that more than 850-million people lack adequate food, despite the fact that the world produces more than enough to feed everyone.

23.03.2005 Il rapporto della "Commissione per l'Africa" dal titolo "Il nostro interesse comune", presentato l'11 marzo scorso dal premier britannico Tony Blair ha sicuramente un doppio merito: l'aver sollevato la questione del "continente dimenticato" (dove povertà e stagnazione segnano "la più grande tragedia del nostro tempo") e rilanciare varie richieste (come la cancellazione totale del debito africano, lo stanziamento dello 0,7% del Pil per aiuti allo sviluppo e un trattato internazionale sul commercio delle armi) da anni avanzate da numerose campagne. Può essere la solita "montagna di carta", ma Blair sembra intezionato a mettere l'Africa nell'agenda internazionale dei prossimi mesi. Un'intento che non andrebbe trascurato da chi è impegnato da anni a fianco della società civile africana. Il Rapporto può diventare, infatti, un'ulteriore leva della società civile e di diverse campagne per far pressione sui governi del G8 e dell'Ue.

But Eritrea failed to remain true to the values and ideals it embraced during that struggle, and the deteriorating economic, social and political situation in the country has left Grassroots no choice but to withdraw its support, the group has said.

21.03.2005 L'appello della Coalizione italiana contro la povertà, ricorda ai governi gli impegni assunti solennemente con la "Dichiarazione del Millennio" per combattere la povertà e promuovere lo sviluppo sostenibile, i diritti umani e la pace. "Dopo cinque anni, non sono ancora stati rispettati" - nota la Coalizione. In Italia "il governo ha continuato a ridurre le già misere risorse dedicate alla cooperazione internazionale tanto che oggi l'Italia è all'ultimo posto nella classifica dei paesi donatori in Europa. Tra tagli e inefficienze, la cooperazione italiana allo sviluppo langue da lungo tempo in uno stato disastroso mentre continuano ad aumentare le spese militari". Centinaia di gruppi, sindacati e organizzazioni della società civile di tutto il mondo stanno unendo i loro sforzi per costringere i propri governi a cambiare politica, sradicare la povertà e realizzare gli Obiettivi di Sviluppo del Millennio.
