Vajaa vuosi sitten viisi pääasiassa maya-intiaanien asuttamaa kylää sai aurinkosähkön Guatemalan itäosassa. Hanke on yksi Suomen ja Keski-Amerikan energia- ja ympäristökumppanuusohjelman kohteista. Kumppanuusohjelma käynnistyi vuonna 2002 YK:n kestävän kehityksen huippukokouksessa. Ohjelmassa ovat mukana seitsemän Keski-Amerikan maata ja Suomi.

"Kun investoidaan vammaiseen ihmiseen ja hänen koulutukseensa, luodaan pääomaa, jota ei hevin varasteta," suomalaisen vammaistyön konkari Ari Suutarla sanoo. Maailman väestöstä kymmenisen prosenttia on vammaisia. Näistä 600 miljoonasta ihmisestä kaksi kolmasosaa asuu kehitysmaissa, ja heistä yli puolet (260 miljoonaa) selviytyy alle dollarilla päivässä.

Aasian talouskasvu lisää moottoriliikennettä, mikä puolestaan nostaa kasvihuonepäästöjen määrää ja heikentää ilmanlaatua, todetaan Aasian kehityspankin tutkimuksissa. Tähän päivään asti polkupyörä on ollut Aasiassa huomattavasti yleisempi näky kuin auto. Talouskasvun myötä tilanne on nopeasti muuttumassa.
