Children as young as 7 and 8 are going missing in large numbers throughout Afghanistan, and no one is sure how many or where they are going. Agencies concerned with children surmise that some are being abducted as slave laborers or beggars, while others are being used to ferry drugs across borders.

Lack of key nutrients such as iron, Vitamin A, and iodine are compromising the mental capabilities and immune systems of millions of poor children, concludes a new report by the Micronutrient Initiative and UNICEF. Adding these micronutrients to common food products could quickly and cheaply turn the situation around, but needs a push from governments.
