According to a recent ILO report on child labour,there are 218m aged 5-17 years, who are employed; of this number, 126m are employed in hazardous work. The United Nations Children's' Fund says that the sheer volume of children engaged in work is living proof of the world's failure to protect them. The campaign, entitled Disaster Risk Reduction Begins at School, which is co-sponsored by the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), aims to promote disaster reduction education in school curricula along with improving school safety by encouraging the application of construction standards that can withstand any kind of natural hazard.

Kalanjiam, a federation of women's self help groups in Vellore, has been instrumental in securing the release of 644 children from match and beedi units. For this, they have mobilised Rs.30,000 in savings to pay off the owners who had loaned paltry sums to the children and were holding them to labour until the money was repaid.

Public funded non-formal education has been in vogue in India from the 1970s. While NFE centres were meant to be a special bridge for underprivileged children to get back to mainstream schools, many are bereft of infrastructure, pay teachers less and teach students little.

Nel mondo oggi quasi 40 milioni di persone soffrono della sindrome da immunodeficienza acquisita, il vero nome dellAids, e due terzi dei malati vivono nellAfrica nera. Si fa un gran parlare di Aids.
