Since 1997 when the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives exchanged a series of letters with the chairman of the Russian Duma, the dialogue between American and Russian legislators continues till the present with the creation of a study group – the only official exchange between both legislatures.

30.07.2004 The International Criminal Court (ICC) announced the commencement of formal investigation into war crimes in Uganda this week. The investigation, prompted by a request from the government of Uganda, will look at the conduct of both rebel and government forces in the 18-year conflict in the northern part of the country.

30.07.2004 The UN Security Council will vote on the final draft of the U.S. resolution on Sudan this week. The resolution does not mention sanctions but threatens economic measures against Sudan if its government fails to disarm the Janjaweed militia.

From the worsening situation in Iraq and Afghanistan, through Washington’s lukewarm relations with India’s new government, to the disappointment of Pakistanis at the Bush administration’s continued support for the repressive government of General Musharraf, U.S. policy in the region is clearly under pressure.

Created at a Bretton Woods conference in 1944, global economy experts believe the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank have long abandoned their founding mission of promoting international economic cooperation by providing member countries with short term loans so they can trade with other countries. The twin institutions now act more like global loan sharks, doling out emergency loan packages with strings attached to troubled countries over whom they exert enormous control, often without giving any thought to global economic equality or environmental destruction.

26.07.2004 According to a new report from Oxfam, the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) reform talks to be held in Geneva this week may collapse because rich countries are not fulfilling their promises to lay the ground for possible reduction of world poverty by redressing global trade imbalances. The draft negotiating text released by the WTO “shows evidence of considerable rich-country influence and does not adequately address key areas of interest to developing countries” such as the export dumping, market access and protection of vulnerable sectors of the their economy.

E l'Associazione Obiettori Nonviolenti (Aon) avverte che se la Camera dei Deputati darà il nulla osta definitivo al provvedimento di anticipo della fine della leva obbligatoria, il servizio civile rischia di scomparire.
