Noon, May 20, 2003, I received a call. "The federal and provincial Ministers of Agriculture are announcing that a northern Alberta cow was confirmed to have a case of BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy)." Farmers have always dealt with uncertain weather and fluctuating commodity prices. Nevertheless as our farm operations industrialized, we tried to plan our marketing, staffing, capital expansion and production to meet our commitments to banks, staff and

While much attention has been paid to several of President Bush's recent high-profile nominations, one that has been largely overlooked has been that of Ann Veneman, the former Secretary of Agriculture chosen to be the new head of UNICEF. Veneman's history has been characterized by "privileging private profit above the public good," says a global public health coalition calling for a rethinking of both the appointment and the appointment process.
