For months the world watched as Kofi Annan faced the charge of awarding a contract to a company where his son was employed. An independent investigation cleared Kofi Annan of any wrongdoing; now it is time to focus on what Annan is doing right, rather than on discredited charges that he did something wrong, argues Kenneth H. Bacon, president of Refugees International.

President Bush's nominee for U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations has advocated the military overthrow of Iran, North Korea, and Syria. He has opposed restrictions on the small arms trade, landmines, and biological weapons, and he has stated the U.S. should not be subject to international law. Bolton has a lot of explaining to do if he's to represent the U.S. in the world body, says the international human rights group Madre.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter warns that in the run-up to a major international conference on nuclear weapons, the world's nuclear powers do not seem intent on reducing the global threat posed by these weapons of mass destruction, and the U.S. has been the worst culprit of late.

For two decades, Canada has fought U.S. trade actions. We have fought them under NAFTA, at the World Trade Organization and at its predecessor, the GATT. If we continue to cave in, the Americans will continue to trample over us whenever they have an important interest to protect. In the softwood lumber dispute, we do have alternatives. Despite the ongoing efforts of our continentalist elites, we still have the capacity to assert ourselves and flourish as an independent nation.

After the U.S. was assured that none of its soldiers would be indicted, the world's leading political superpower finally agreed Thursday to allow war crimes suspects from the war-ravaged Darfur region of Sudan to be brought before the International Criminal Court in The Hague. More than six months ago, the U.S. called the situation in Darfur "genocide," but little international action has been taken since.

Much of U.S. and global civil society have expressed strong misgivings about the nomination.

Eleven years ago the world folded its arms as a genocide unfolded, leaving 800,000 Rwandans dead. Some 400,000 Sudanese are estimated to have died already as a result of what's been described as genocide in Darfur. As Washington, D.C.-based Africa Action prepares for next week's White House vigil--to commemorate Rwanda and call for more intense international action to save Darfur--OneWorld asked the group to explain the past, present, and future for Darfur.

The story of Finland’s rise from the status of a poor country to an aid donor reads very much like a blue-print from which developing countries could take a leaf. But can it be replicated in the developing countries? Land reforms or conflict resolution are examples of areas where common experiences could be found.
