India has said it will give Nepal 10 billion rupees ($218m, £118m) in aid, most of it to be spent on development. The funds will be used to help build or upgrade roads, railways, an oil pipeline and an airport, a joint Indo-Nepalese statement said.

"La positiva decisione del Ministro degli Esteri D'Alema di rinunciare all'invio di un contingente civile-militare in Iraq ma di definire un efficace programma di cooperazione a livello politico, economico e umanitario va ora tradotta in concreto" - chiedono in un comunicato le Ong del Forum Solint. Nei giorni scorse le Ong del Forum (Cisp, Coopi, Cosv, Intersos, Movimondo e Associazione delle Ong italiane) avevano espresso dubbi sulla missione civile-militare, ma "ritengono ora di potere esprimere alcuni suggerimenti come contributo alla definizione delle priorità della cooperazione italiana con l'Iraq". Tra queste il coordinamento multilaterale come "via maestra per dare efficacia alle iniziative di cooperazione volte al rafforzamento delle istituzioni democratiche, della sicurezza, dello sviluppo infrastrutturale ed economico dell'Iraq". Le Ong chiedono inoltre al Governo italiano di "considerare prioritario il mantenimento all'Iraq della piena sovranità sul petrolio iracheno e sui profitti che ne derivano". E sottolineano che il rafforzamento del processo democratico iracheno passa dallo sviluppo delle organizzazioni della società civile a garanzia di tale processo e a sua difesa.

Si è aperta oggi a Riga la 25ª Conferenza Regionale della Fao per l'Europa con l'intervento del direttore generale Fao Jacques Diouf. Allarmanti i dati riportati da Diouf nella relazione: “854 milioni di persone soffrono ancora oggi la fame nel mondo dei quali 820 milioni nei paesi poveri, 25 nei cosiddetti Paesi in transizione e 9 in quelli industrializzati”. E mentre nella prima metà degli anni ‘90 il numero di persone malnutrito era calato di 26 milioni di unità, nella seconda metà degli anni '90 le persone che soffrono la malnutrizione è risalito di 23 milioni di unità, praticamente annullando i pochi risultati ottenuti nei 5 anni precedenti e drammaticamente distanti da quelli fissati con la Dichiarazione del Millennio approvata dall'assemblea delle Nazioni Unite nel 2000. "Il diritto al cibo è uno dei diritti fondamentali - ha commentato Sergio Marelli, presidente del Comitato Italiano per la Sovranità Alimentare, presente a Riga. Il Comitato ribadisce che l'Organizzazione Mondiale del Commercio (Wto/Omc) non deve avere giurisdizione sulle politiche agricole ed alimentari che devono avere come primo obiettivo la produzione e messa a disposizione per tutti di cibo in quantità e in qualità adeguate".
