The recently concluded Manthan Awards 2007 brought together India’s E-content stakeholders from across the ICT arena, government, civil society, NGOs and industry to discuss the role of e-content for development to empower rural India. The high-profile event was held from September 21- 22 at the India Islamic Cultural Centre, New Delhi.

A recent report on Afghanistan reveals that social and economic progress is still a distant dream for its people as they struggle amidst military conflict. Over six million Afghans remain hungry while 60,000 children are addicted to drugs, the Human Development Report 2007 claimed.

Ieri, 27 settembre, si è tenuto in tutto il mondo lo "Stop Epa Day", una mobilitazione mondiale nel quinto anniversario dell'avvio dei negoziati tra Unione europea (UE) e Paesi dell'Africa, dei Caraibi e del Pacifico (ACP), per la firma degli Accordi di Partenariato Economico (APE/EPA). A cinque anni di distanza e pochi mesi dalla scadenza fissata per prossimo 31 dicembre 2007, la società civile si è mobilitata per opporsi alla logica degli interessi di espansione degli affari europei che ormai permea questi accordi di liberalizzazione. In Italia la Campagna per la riforma della Banca mondiale (CRBM), Fair e Manitese, hanno chiesto al Parlamento italiano di colmare il deficit di democrazia che caratterizza la conduzione di questi accordi.

The Independent Peoples Tribunal (IPT) on the World Bank in India has held the Bank’s policies and projects guilty of causing untold sufferings among millions of poor and of violating human rights. The four-day hearing was attended by activists, civil society groups, academics, policy analysts and project affected communities who presented evidence against the Bank.

India’s first attempt to introduce social security and other welfare schemes for workers in the unorganised sector, which constitutes an overwhelming majority of the country’s workforce, has received Cabinet approval. But it will have to wait until the winter session of Parliament to be passed into law.

Organizzata dall'Africa Peace Point in collaborazione con la Tavola della Pace la marcia si prefigge di unire le comunità, cercando di superare le differenze sociali e politiche per ottenere pace e sviluppo anche in vista delle elezioni generali che si terranno a dicembre. "Su questi temi insisteremo per arrivare al voto con un’idea precisa di quello che vogliamo ottenere" - affermano gli organizzatori. Presente anche una delegazione della Marcia Perugia-Assisi per sancire un gemellaggio non solo ideale. E, domani, si celebra la "Giornata per il Darfur" promossa dalla "Save Darfur Coalition" con manifestazioni e azioni anche in Italia a favore della regione sudanese dove le violenze nell’arco di quattro anni hanno provocato 200mila morti e due milioni e mezzo di sfollati.

A cholera outbreak has hit parts of Orissa, India in the wake of massive flooding, following South Asia's worst monsoon season in living memory. Local sources have told ActionAid that nearly 250 people have died in Koraput, Rayagada and Kalahadi, more than double the official death toll of 115.
