Down on Bay Street, the party is back on. This RRSP season, markets are up, and long-suffering-brokers' bonuses are once again flowing. The investment industry has been suffering its worst-ever crisis in confidence - yet some investors already seem willing to forgive and forget. Incredulous, economist Jim Stanford proposes an anti-tobacco-style shock-and-awe campaign to educate the public on the dangers of mutual funds.

The Swazi government this week formally acknowledged a state of national emergency: the population is devastated by HIV/AIDS; agricultural production has plummeted due to drought and lack of manpower in the fields; hunger is widespread. Does the Swazi crisis foreshadow Africa's future?

« Vive l'éthique dans les affaires ! » « Vive l'entreprise morale !

Jo kahden vuoden ajan Kanadassa on valmisteltu lähes salassa parlamentilta sopimusta, jolla perustettaisiin vapaakauppa-alue Keski-Amerikan pienten valtioiden kanssa. Kohutun Amerikkojen vapaakauppa-alueen (FTAA) neuvotteluja julkinen kritiikki on selvästi hidastanut, joten nyt strategiaksi on tullut maiden vähittäinen "eristäminen" toisistaan pienemmillä sopimuksella, asiaa seurannut Esperanza Moreno uskoo.

President Nestor Kirchner of Argentina is emerging as the leading nemesis of the International Monetary Fund and the private financial speculators in South America. Assuming office in May 2003 with less than a quarter of the popular vote, he now enjoys 85% support in the opinion polls due in large part to his determination to take on the neo-liberal policies that lead to the country's economic collapse in 2001-2.

British Columbia tabled its promised balanced budget Tuesday. But economist Marc Lee warns that any economic shocks - like last year's forest fires - will throw the province back into the red. The precarious balance was achieved largely through more spending cuts, new "sin taxes," one-time accounting changes, and one-time revenues from selling off BC Rail. Bottom line: more pain from cuts, with that promised economic boom nowhere on the horizon.
