Noon, May 20, 2003, I received a call. "The federal and provincial Ministers of Agriculture are announcing that a northern Alberta cow was confirmed to have a case of BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy)." Farmers have always dealt with uncertain weather and fluctuating commodity prices. Nevertheless as our farm operations industrialized, we tried to plan our marketing, staffing, capital expansion and production to meet our commitments to banks, staff and

Korruption vastainen ryhmä Transparency International esittää vuosittaisessa raportissaan kovia totuuksia lahjonnan kulttuurista rakennusalalla ympäri maailmaa. Teollisuustuotannon voimakas kasvu on luonut Kiinaan suuren siirtotyöläisjoukon. Työntekijöiden lailliset oikeudet eivät toteudu, eivätkä he usein edes tiedä mitä voisivat vaatia, todetaan FinnWatchin ja Kansalaisjärjestöjen vientiluottokampanjan teettämässä tutkimuksessa.

A slew of environmental groups have voiced their dismay with the U.S. Senate's attempt to open the long-protected Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling, which they say is so unpopular with Americans that even many oil companies are no longer interested in it.

Rock-star and anti-poverty activist Bono has rolled out a designer line distinguished by the fact that the hemp blazers, cotton shirts and other garments are manufactured in family-run factories in South America and Africa that practice fair-labor. The venture creates employment opportunities in poor countries and benefits the high-scale shopper who wants to be socially concious and at the same time rock star trendy.

Quebec environment minister Thomas Mulcair raised eyebrows – if not wages – last week when he blamed the province's public transit woes on bus drivers, who, he claimed, earn $100,000 per year. To Claude Benoît, it's proof that the minister missed the briefing on public transit. The president of CUPE 1983, which represents Montreal bus drivers, pointed out that the average salary for his members is $47,000.

Yhdysvalloissa osakeyhtiöt ovat saaneet ennätysmäärän ilmastonmuutokseen liittyviä osakkeenomistajien ponsilauselmia vuonna 2005. Lauselmissa vaaditaan läpinäkyvämpää taloudellista päätöksentekoa ja suunnitelmia päästöjen leikkaamiseksi. Lauselmia saaneet yhtiöt kuuluvat Yhdysvaltain merkittävimpiin kasvihuonekaasujen tuottajiin ja niiden toiminta on siten alttiina kansainvälisille markkinapohjaisille hiilidioksidipäästöjen rajoituksille.

Asia--the world's most populous region--could face severe economic problems as glaciers on the Himalayan mountain ranges melt away due to global warming, causing river levels to surge and then decline, warns the World Wildlife Fund. Dwindling rivers would seriously affect agriculture and industry, the group explains to a meeting of the 20 largest energy using economies in the world taking place in London.

Asiantuntijaselvityksen mukaan hyökyaallon taloudelliset menetykset nousevat Intiassa noin 1,2 miljardiin dollariin. Aineellisten vahinkojen lisäksi perinteisten elinkeinojen tuhoutuminen aiheutti rannikkoseuduilla mittavat taloudelliset tappiot. Jälleenrakentamisen kustannukset nousevat luonnonkatastrofin aiheuttamia tappioita suuremmiksi, sillä esimerkiksi tuhoalueiden raivaaminen on mittava urakka.

Argentiinan presidentti Néstor Kirchner kehottaa kansalaisia boikotoimaan Royal Dutch/Shell -öljy-yhtiötä, koska sen tekemät hinnankorotukset ovat hänen mielestään aiheettomia. Brittiläis-hollantilaisen Shellin mukaan 2,6-4,2 prosentin hinnankorotus johtuu öljyn hinnan noususta maailmanmarkkinoilla. Kilpailevat yhtiöt eivät toistaiseksi ole nostaneet hintojaan.

Kiinan vienti kasvoi helmikuussa reilun kolmanneksen, mikä viittaa siihen, että ulkomaankauppa pyörittää edelleen vahvasti maan taloutta. Myös tammi-helmikuun yhteenlaskettu vienti kasvoi hieman ennakko-odotuksia enemmän. Muun muassa afrikkalaiskauppiaat matkustavat yhä enenevässä määrin manner-Kiinaan ostaakseen halvempia tuotteita suoraan valmistajalta.
