La Coalizione italiana contro la povertà, che raccoglie circa sessanta associazioni della società civile italiana ha ricordato al Governo italiano, a sei giorni dal G8, gli impegni assunti (e in gran parte disattesi) per il raggiungimento degli Obiettivi del Millennio stabiliti nel 2000 in sede Onu per combattere la povertà e l’ingiustizia. Su questo tema la Coalizione ha presentato due documenti di approfondimento e di proposte. All’incontro hanno partecipato, tra gli altri, Jovanotti e Antonello Venditti, due tra gli artisti italiani che parteciperanno al concerto del Live8 del 2 luglio a Roma. Il 1 luglio sarà la giornata mondiale di richiamo sui temi del G8, con l'esposizione della “white band”, una striscia di stoffa con la scritta “Stop alla povertà” prodotta in Italia in un milione di pezzi dalla città di Prato.

Just days before the G8 summit, taking place next week in Scotland, international development organization, ActionAid has hit out at the developed nations for providing aid that serves their corporate interests, pushes privatization in recipient countries, funnels money to rich consultants and leaves the poor countries heavily indebted. Rahul Kumar reports from New Delhi.

In advance of the G8 summit, trade union leaders representing workers from 150 countries met with Tony Blair Wednesday, highlighting that fair and sustainable work worldwide is a critical element in the campaign to end poverty and calling on G8 leaders to take more decisive steps on poverty, environmental issues, and HIV/AIDS.

At a Beijing meeting last week, UN special advisor Jeffrey Sachs asked China to take the lead in the fight against malaria. By cultivating a shrub that produces an anti–malarial medicine, China could make major contributions to reduce global poverty and meet the U.N. Millennium Development Goals.

U.S. religious leaders have found a common cause: ending global poverty. With their rallying point next week’s G-8 summit, Evangelical, Protestant, and Catholic leaders are pressing President Bush and Congress to boost American leadership and financial commitment to the global campaign to make poverty history--and they are telling their congregations to do the same.

La Coalizione Italiana contro la povertà offre gratuitamente a 20 persone la possibilità di essere a Gleneagles in Scozia in occasione del Summit G8 per assistere al memorabile concerto a cui parteciperanno artisti come Annie Lennox e Youssou N’Dour e per ricordare ai G8 le loro promesse di sostegno ai Paesi più poveri. Domani si tiene a Roma la conferenza in cui verrà presentata la posizione della Coalizione italiana contro la povertà rispetto al G8 e l’impegno a sollecitare il nostro Governo a rispettare gli impegni a favore degli Obiettivi del Millennio, sottoscritti nel 2000.

Representatives of the “Familija” Ngo from Prijedor presented the Association of Roma of Prijedor Area with technical and office equipment. The donation, worth 12,000 KM (approximately 6,000 EUR), includes a TV set, VCR machine, CD-radio player/recorder, fax machine and one computer the software and hardware package.

Some of the world's most famous monuments--from St. Paul's Cathedral in London to a cotton tree planted by freed slaves in Sierra Leone--will be adorned with massive white cloths Friday as worldwide parties and demonstrations launch the first mass action in what many expect to be the largest anti-poverty campaign ever. Governments will be held to account for promises to end corruption and to take the economic steps necessary to end extreme poverty worldwide.

A new report by the Brookings Institution shows President Bush has significantly exaggerated the amount of aid his administration has provided to sub-Saharan Africa. With the approaching G8 summit and recent aid commitments made by E.U. nations, Bush is facing increasing pressure to be more cooperative internationally and encourage the efforts of poor countries.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said that the sagging farm sector growth, which has deprived the rural poor of substantial benefits, has to be doubled. He also stressed that the country will have to improve its performance in the water and the power sectors.

A senior official in the Indian agricultural ministry has called for closer ties between South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) members in the field of agriculture and rural development so that it could benefit the poor people of the region. Dr Mangal Rai urged the seven countries to chalk out a Perspective Plan for the entire region.

Beyond the tourist havens of Buenos Aires and Patagonia, Argentina's economic fall-out is still visible: nearly 75% of children live in poverty and the political distrust--which cemented the economic collapse--continues as Kirchner’s administration is removed from the people. Selon de nouvelles recherches dont les résultats sont publiés ce mercredi 22 juin 2005, en exportant des armes de manière irresponsable dans certains des pays les plus pauvres et les plus touchés par la guerre, les États du G8 ne tiennent pas leurs engagements de réduire la pauvreté, de ramener la stabilité et de faire respecter les droits humains. Des armes ont ainsi été exportées dans des pays comme la Colombie, le Myanmar (ex-Birmanie), les Philippines, la République du Congo et le Soudan.

As people around Canada and the world join the call to action against poverty, the 4th annual report on civil society engagement with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) has been released. Entitled, "WE the Peoples 2005- Mobilizing for Change: Messages from Civil Society," the report gathers information from civil society organizations around the globe -- their opinions, priorities and actions -- relative to the implementation of the MDGs and the Millennium Declaration.

A new report by Oxfam - Targeting Poor People - says that the poor suffered the most as a result of the tsunami and need to be supported further during the reconstruction phase, a new report released today (Saturday) by international agency Oxfam.
