Tänä vuonna kolmepäiväisessä istunnossa keskityttiin kumppanuuksien lujittamiseen turvallisuuden ja kestävän kehityksen aloilla. Tavoitteena on YK:n vuosituhattavoitteiden saavuttaminen.

An Indian government study finds that almost one in six ship workers at AsiaÂ’s largest shipbreaking yard, Alang in Gujarat, suffers from asbestos poisoning that could lead to lung cancer. At 2 per 1,000, the fatal accident rate among AlangÂ’s ship workers is several times higher than the 0.34 per 1,000 in the mining industry, considered IndiaÂ’s most unsafe profession.

For the past two years CASHE along with its associates, has been organizing ‘microfinance India’ conference which draws attention of national and international sector experts. Pääsihteeri Kofi Annan painotti lausunnossaan lukutaidon merkitystä ja oppimisen edellytyksiä kehityksen vahvistajina. Myös UNESCO:n pääjohtaja Koïchuro Matsuura korosti lukutaidon olevan yksi kehityksen tärkeimmistä välineistä, joka kehittää koko yhteiskuntaa.

Santraj Maurya is a young waste-picker, who works in New Delhi's elite residential areas undertaking door-to-door garbage collection. Last month he was invited to a conference to Belo Horizonte in Brazil but was denied boarding by Alitalia officials. This autumn, the Global Month of Action will see millions of people in over a hundred countries unite again under the banner of the white band, as they stand up against poverty and renew the call for trade justice, debt cancellation and more and better aid. The Month begins on 14 September, as the IMF and World Bank meet in Singapore, and culminates on 17 October, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, in a Global White Band Day.

The Indian Finance Ministry has set up an expert group to look into the growing problem of agricultural indebtedness and suggest relief measures for distressed farmers across the country. The committee will also make recommendations on farmersÂ’ demands for loan waivers, Indian Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar told Parliament on August 24.

"STAND UP" to communicate the greatest number of people ever to STAND UP Agaist Poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals - on October 15-16 2006. Within a 24-hour period, a minimum of 10,000 people must physically and symbolically and to hold their governments and leaders accountable for promises to end poverty by 2015.
