Online Forum on Financial Mechanisms is launched to discuss the financing of ICT for development projects. The outcome of this discussion will be sent to the Task Force on Financing Mechanisms (TFFM) set up to explore the challenges and opportunities in financing the implementation of the Plan of Action adopted in the WSIS.

Policy issues and financing of ICT for development will be the key discussion issues for the upcoming UN ICT Taskforce meeting. The global forum with the theme “Promoting enabling environment for digital development” is going to be held from November 19 to 20, 2004 in Berlin.

Yoshio Utsumi, Secretary General, ITU invites governments and other stakeholders to participate in the WSIS stocktaking process. By filling up a questionnaire, stakeholders can help assessing progress in implementation of the Plan of Action at national, regional and international levels.

As the Asian regional consultation for WSIS opens in 11 to 13 October in Bangkok, representatives of government, civil society and private institutions will discuss the regional and national implementations of the outcomes of the first phase of the WSIS and the preparation of the draft Regional Plan of Action for the next phase of the summit. UNESCAP, the leading agency for this dialogue plans to initiate four sub-regional discussions in Central Asia, Pacific, South-Asia and South-east Asia to strengthen the final input to the process.

UNDP administrator Mark Malloch Brown will chair the Task Force on Financial Mechanisms to review the issues of funding ICT-led initiatives in developing countries. This newly-formed Task Force is expected to solicit recommendations for the second phase of WSIS on the issue of financing initiatives towards bridging the digital divide.

The Association for Community Networking has invited free participation in a new working group on telecentres and other public technology initiatives in the run-up to the World Summit for Information Society 2005. The group will discuss ICT projects that can help achieve the goals of WSIS.
