According to a recent ILO report on child labour,there are 218m aged 5-17 years, who are employed; of this number, 126m are employed in hazardous work. The United Nations Children's' Fund says that the sheer volume of children engaged in work is living proof of the world's failure to protect them. The campaign, entitled Disaster Risk Reduction Begins at School, which is co-sponsored by the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), aims to promote disaster reduction education in school curricula along with improving school safety by encouraging the application of construction standards that can withstand any kind of natural hazard.

Kalanjiam, a federation of women's self help groups in Vellore, has been instrumental in securing the release of 644 children from match and beedi units. For this, they have mobilised Rs.30,000 in savings to pay off the owners who had loaned paltry sums to the children and were holding them to labour until the money was repaid.

Po ashtu një sërë organizatash të tjera joqeveritare organizuan aktivitete në rrethe për të sensibilizuar pushtetin vendor dhe publikun mbi këtë fenomen.

Public funded non-formal education has been in vogue in India from the 1970s. While NFE centres were meant to be a special bridge for underprivileged children to get back to mainstream schools, many are bereft of infrastructure, pay teachers less and teach students little.

A 5 anni dalla sottoscrizione di un piano globale per far fronte alla pandemia, che nel 2005 ha falcidiato quasi tre milioni di persone, la Conferenza dell’Ungass (la Sessione speciale dell'Onu per l'Aids) ha partorito infatti solo un documento non vincolante. “Scandalosa e mortale”, aveva stigmatizzato Kofi Annan la lentezza con cui i governi stanno affrontando il grande flagello che dagli anni ’80, quando fu scoperto il virus, ha mietuto più di 25 milioni di vittime. Nel mondo oggi quasi 40 milioni di persone soffrono della sindrome da immunodeficienza acquisita, il vero nome dell’Aids, e due terzi dei malati vivono nell’Africa nera. Si fa un gran parlare di Aids. Ma solo un sesto degli impegni sottoscritti nel 2001 con il primo Piano d’azione globale sono stati mantenuti. di Nicoletta Dentico

Avvolta in uno splendido sahri di seta ha partecipato, nell’ambito della manifestazione “Asia: questAltroMondo”, organizzata in occasione del World Social Agenda 2006. Cresciuta in un’India ancora piena di contraddizioni, ma sempre più decisa a migliorare la condizione sociale (Kezevino ha ricordato agli studenti che grazie agli investimenti nel campo della sanità , dell’istruzione e dello sviluppo in genere l’aspettativa di vita per le donne è raddoppiata negli ultimi 50 anni, passando da 32 a 64 anni) Kezevino rappresenta l’immagine di una donna che ha scelto di impegnare tutta la propria vita per il riscatto dei più deboli. di Alberto Conci
