At a Beijing meeting last week, UN special advisor Jeffrey Sachs asked China to take the lead in the fight against malaria. By cultivating a shrub that produces an anti–malarial medicine, China could make major contributions to reduce global poverty and meet the U.N. Millennium Development Goals.

The “LULUDI” Roma Association of Women and Youth, in cooperation with the “For a Happy Childhood” NGO, implemented a national survey on the use of health insurance and healthcare among the Roma in Macedonia. The survey, conducted on a sample of 1,000 Roma families, provides a general picture of the characteristics, needs and priorities of the Roma population in terms of healthcare.

American Indians and Alaska Natives have the highest youth suicide rates in the nation, and in some areas Native American young people are more than ten times as likely to commit suicide than their white counterparts. Many hope that the U.S. Senate's newfound attention to the issue will generate awareness and funding for prevention and education programs.

Would a two-tier health care system reduce waiting lists in Canada? No. Parallel private systems don't cut public waiting lists. In fact, research evidence shows they lengthen waits for health-care in public systems. Countries with parallel public and private health-care systems have the longest waiting times. For example, England and New Zealand, which have parallel private hospital systems, have larger waiting lists and longer waiting times in the public system than countries with a single-payer system, such as Canada.

The Indian government has taken steps to ban the blending of MMT, a manganese-based deadly octane enhancer, in petrol as it damages the brain and also harms emission control components in vehicles. New Delhi-based NGO, Centre for Science and Environment, has alleged that though it was banned in Canada and the US, the MMT business had just about begun to shift its base to Asia and Africa.

The Millennium Project has submitted a report to the UN secretary general, that provides the best strategies for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The UN Millennium Project is headed by Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, Special Advisor to the Secretary-General on the MDGs. The bulk of its analytical work has been carried out by 10 thematic task forces comprising more than 250 experts from around the world.

Four African governments have said they will not use generic AIDS drugs made in South Africa that have been cleared by the U.S. Federal Drug Administration unless they are also approved by the World Health Organization. U.S. officials say the WHO would not ensure the same quality as the FDA, but the African governments have long relied on WHO testing, and see no reason to switch now.

Aid agencies and doctors are calling on Coalition forces in Iraq to allow them safe access to Karabila, where hundreds require medical treatment and thousands of families have run out of food and water. Since the June 17 launch of 'Operation Spear'--designed to prevent rebels from using the region as a staging post en route from Syria--U.S. forces have prohibited anyone to enter or leave the village.
