Most countries in South Asia are lagging far behind, when it comes to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015, says a report released by United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) earlier this week.

Handloom weavers in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh are battling poverty and tuberculosis while the government sponsored schemes still elude them. The Asian Human Rights Commission has launched an appeal to the people to urge the government to take action.

Over 3,000 labourers signed on a monster banner to remind the Pakistan government of its promises to eradicate poverty and other MDG goals. The 10 km banner, patched together from smaller bits of cloth, will carry 1.5 million signatures to be unfurled in Bahawalpur on October 17.

A new manual encourages the hearing disabled communities in developing countries to take control of their health. Developed by the Kenyan Peer Education Network,The Deaf Peers’ Education Manual addresses three main issues: sexual education, relationships and hygiene for a basic understanding of sexual health, HIV/AIDS, and can be adapted to fit the cultural context and needs of the deaf communities.

A smart card at an annual fee of INR 30 will help India's poor access good health. The Indian government has plans to offer health,life and disability insurance to around 400 million poor working in the unorganized sector. Also in the offing: a pension scheme for people over 65 living below the poverty line.

Damages due to pollution are costing billions of rupees annually to the national exchequer in Pakistan, claims a recent study by the World Bank. Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) has expressed concern over the harmful rise in urban air particulate.

Driving a low-cost small car may just not be the answer to your commuting woes, says a new study by the Delhi based Centre for Science and Environment, claiming such cars will lead to major congestion and pollution on Indian roads. The study also calls for mandatory safety standards and policy corrections.

Di Cilacap kini terdapat 11 lokasi para pekerja seks komersial (PSK). Jumlah PSK sekarang ada 381 orang dengan 89 orang mucikari, alias meningkat dari tahun lalu. PSK Cilacap yang diduga terjangkit HIV kini jumlahnya 40 orang dan AIDS 2 orang.

Tahun 2001, Her, 30 tahun, baru sadar tertular HIV/AIDS. Namun seperti orang lainnya, dia menikah dan kini dikaruniai seorang anak berusia 1,6 tahun. Ada saat di mana Her dapat menggauli istrinya tanpa menggunakan kondom. Ajaibnya, istri dan anaknya tak tertular HIV.

Penderita sipilis atau penyakit kelamin di Kalimantan Selatan (Kalsel) dalam dua tahun terakhir naik 300 persen, dari 35 orang penderita pada 2005 menjadi 104 orang pada 2006. Hal itu diungkapkan pengelola program HIV/AIDS Dinas Kesehatan Kalsel.
