The second Global AIDS Week of Action will be held during the week 20-25 May 2007 across the globe. It is an opportunity for activists to unite, generate political pressure and demand a stronger response from our leaders in the fight against HIV and AIDS. The week of action will also be a reminder to the upcoming G8 Summit in Germany.

"La riluttanza ad affrontare la questione delle condizioni igienico-sanitarie č una parte delle cause per cui, a livello mondiale, circa 2,6 miliardi di persone risultano prive di adeguati servizi igienico-sanitari, e conseguentemente della necessaria protezione contro malattie prevenibili, responsabili ogni giorno della morte di migliaia di persone, la maggior parte delle quali sono bambini". Č quanto sottolineato dagli esperti convenuti ieri al Primo incontro preparatorio dell'iniziativa per l'Anno internazionale sulle condizioni igienico-sanitarie in programma per il 2008. "Oltre 1 miliardo di persone in tutto il mondo ha guadagnato l'accesso a servizi igienici adeguati negli ultimi 14 anni, ma circa 2,6 miliardi - inclusi 980 milioni di bambini - ne restano tuttora privi" - sottolinea l'Unicef.

The UN has declared 2008 as the International Year of Sanitation. In its first preparatory meeting at New York on 7 May, participants from NGOs, citizen groups, academics and private sector and hosts UNICEF, UNDESA and UNSGAB agreed on the need for an urgent action plan to help accelerate progress and public awareness on sanitation worldwide.

An oral test for HIV will soon become the preferred alternative to blood tests, claim researchers. In a study, 66% of those who did a blood test complained of discomfort, while only 8% of those who submitted to the oral test had complaints. The oral test OraQuick Rapid HIV1/2 is 100% accurate and can get good results in rural settings in China and India.

Environment NGOs in India are protesting the decision of the Gujarat government to burn toxic chemicals lying for years in the Union Carbide plant in neighbouring state of Bhopal. Environmentalists fear the possibility of ecological hazards during transportation and disposal of the waste.

A two-day round-table talk on waste management in health care will start on 3rd May at Bangalore, India. Government representatives, NGOs and international health experts plan to chalk out guidelines for hospital hygiene and safety of healthcare workers. The conference is organised by German Technical Cooperation (GTC) and Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests, in alliance with HCWM Cell of M.S Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore.
