29.01.2006 In occasione della 53a Giornata mondiale dei malati di lebbra, l'Aifo ha diffuso un appello lanciato da sette personalità del mondo ai Capi di Stato e di Governo per porre fine allo stigma e alla discriminazione contro le persone affette dalla malattia. L'Organizzazione mondiale della Sanità ha assunto una nuova strategia nella lotta contro la lebbra: "Il documento strategico per il triennio 2006-2010, infatti, segna una svolta nella politica dell'OMS contro la malattia, caratterizzata fino ad oggi da un approccio semplicemente statistico" - informa l'Aifo. Il nuovo approccio è centrato sulla persona e sulla comunità, adottando il principio della salute globale, da sempre sostenuto dall'Aifo. Il papa Benedetto XVI ha rivolto oggi un saluto a tutte le persone colpite dalla malattia ed un incoraggiamento ad operatori e volontari impegnati, in tutto il mondo per combattere l'hanseniasi. Ricordando l'opera di Raoul Follereau e delle associazioni che a lui si ispirano, il Papa ha sottolineato lo stretto collegamento esistente tra il persistere di questa malattia e i gravi squilibri sociali che penalizzano larga parte dell'umanità.

"Sono continuate le tensioni internazionali che hanno acuito le tensioni tra i popoli, sparato culture e tracciato profondi solchi tra grandi religioni. La guerra in Iraq, la perdurante tensione in Medio Oriente, i cosiddetti conflitti a bassa intensità che insanguinano l'Africa, le tensioni diplomatiche nell'area asiatica, il perdurare delle tensioni nelle Ex Repubbliche Sovietiche e l'instabilità dell'Afghanistan del dopo Talebani, sono stati, nell'anno passato, tutti drammatici capitoli aperti dei quali non si intravedono soluzioni sostenibili".
