Bringing sustainable development into the classroom
16.05.2006 The Indian leadership has been trying to position the country as a knowledge hub, but is India merely relying on its people for this reputation? Has India been able to attract foreign India, thereby validating its position as a knowledge hub — international students account for less than 8,000 of the entire higher education population.

Poor community, general street scene, Dehli, March 2004
15.05.2006 The political class is well aware of the “revolution of rising expectations.” There is increasing empirical evidence that high-growth states are best able to attack poverty and increase employment, that there is no meaningful alternative to policies that focus on high economic growth. State governments need to focus on improving infrastructure, achieving sound law and order and attracting private investment in order to raise growth.

15.05.2006 Despite IndiaÂ’s recent strong growth performance, there is a growing concern that the benefits of growth have been concentrated in IndiaÂ’s richer states, leaving the poorer states
lagging further and further behind. The present study by IMF examines this trend and finds that (i) the income gap between rich and poor states has widened; (ii) rich and faster-growing states have been more effective in reducing poverty; (iii) poor and lower-growing states have had little success in generating private sector jobs; (iv) labor and capital flows do little to close income gaps; and (v) the volatility in economic growth is greatest in poor states. Differences in statesÂ’ policies affect the cross-state pattern of growth. Greater private sector investment, smaller governments, and better institutions are found to have a positive impact on growth.
