The United Nations must ensure that negotiations on international trade in agriculture respect human rights, including the right to adequate food and water. In a statement presented at the UN Commission on Human Rights in Geneva, a coalition (including Rights & Democracy) points to UN estimates that more than 850-million people lack adequate food, despite the fact that the world produces more than enough to feed everyone.

"Why should the worlds poorest people be excluded from the process of selecting one of the most important leaders who will affect their lives?" asks the Reverend Jesse Jackson, suggesting that southern countries nominate their own choice for World Bank president this week. How about Nelson Mandela, Arundhati Roy, or Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai of Kenya--they all know a thing or two about helping poor people.

Overall global wealth has grown but the wealth is so unevenly distributed that only a small fraction of the world's population is benefiting. We need to take comprehensive action to fulfill already made commitments on development agenda, says Kofi Annan in his report to the UN General Assembly.

Imagine there was no running water in your home. Imagine having to walk several kilometres to a tap, well or river to collect water, and then carry it home. This is what millions of women and children do every day in developing countries sometimes more than once a day. They carry every drop of water they use for drinking, cooking, cleaning and bathing.

Grassroots International's Eritrea program launched in 1983, during the country's remarkable liberation struggle against better funded and better equipped Ethiopia. But Eritrea failed to remain true to the values and ideals it embraced during that struggle, and the deteriorating economic, social and political situation in the country has left Grassroots no choice but to withdraw its support, the group has said.
