31.10.2005 The culture and livelihoods of the Gwich'in people, who have lived in the region for 20,000 years, could be destroyed by oil drilling programs proposed for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, according to a new report released last week. 25.10.2005 Il risultato del referendum non lascia dubbi. Ha vinto, e con ampio vantaggio, la cultura della paura e della ricerca individuale di soluzioni contro la violenza, con il 64% dei voti. La cultura della pace, la societą e lo Stato ne escono sconfitti. Quelli che hanno appoggiato il '2 SĢ' sono stati, di fatto, una minoranza, anche tra quelli che avrebbero dovuto difenderlo per tradizione o per dovere: le ONGs, i Movimenti Sociali e Popolari, le Chiese (lottano per la vita?), Sindacati e Partiti di Centro-Sinistra. Lo stesso governo poco ha fatto in favore del “SI”. Per spiegare questa sconfitta non serve analizzare i grandi mezzi e ricorsi a disposizione della destra. Il conflitto che sta degenerando nasce da un approccio sbagliato ai temi della legalitą e della sicurezza" scrive Paolo Beni, presidente nazionale Arci dopo le contestazioni che a Bologna hanno richiamato il sindaco Sergio Cofferati. Per Beni, limitarsi a “ripristinare la legalitą” di fronte a cosi gravi problemi sociali, spesso nasconde la mancanza di soluzioni efficaci e giuste. “L’unica via d’uscita č provare a costruire soluzioni partecipate, che partano dalla consapevolezza che la democrazia locale ha bisogno di tutti i soggetti per governare la complessitą e non di un sovrano illuminato" conclude Beni che propone un incontro nazionale a Bologna, dal quale far partire una riflessione avanzata su “complessitą sociale e urbanistica dell’inclusione” con la partecipazione di tutta la societą civile.
