Students at a Cisco Networking workshop
16.07.2003 Students in universities across Cameroon, Nigeria, Tanzania and Zambia now have easy and better access to the Internet. A joint effort by Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), UNDP and Cisco Networking has made this possible. Giving technical support and training in networking, Web design and office tools, the project aims at maximizing business opportunities for these communities.

Basket wevers in Egypt
14.07.2003 The Commonwealth Service Abroad Programme (CSAP) has started a project with its partners to enhance the business prospects of women entrepreneurs in Cameroon through the use of ICTs. To be held in three phases, the project will focus on transferring technology in the areas of portal design and development, Website design and development as well as e-commerce training.

The "ICT and Civil Society in Africa" reports were commissioned by APC to explore the role of local civil society organisations in developing and strengthening ICT policy-making at a national level in Africa.

20.03.2003 The Cameroonian government has closed Magic FM, a privately owned radio station based in Yaoundé, the Reporters Without Borders reported. The radio station's closure comes less than a month after the authorities shut down two privately owned TV channels, RTA and Canal 2.

20.10.2002 Uganda has been elected as one of Africa's representatives on the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council. The Council is the Union's supreme administrative organ and is responsible for policies that include spectrum regulation for telecom and Internet applications. Other African countries that have been elected are: South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, Mali, Tunisia, Morocco, Senegal, Algeria, Burkina Faso and Cameroon.

Burden of poverty
21.08.2002 Rural NGOs and women's groups in Cameroon are working with UNDP to reach out to poor communities with the benefits of information technology. Many poor and illiterate women have benefited from life-saving knowledge and training in income-generating skills, which are based on information received via the Internet and online networking.
