New figures from the National Statistics Office show that 78 per cent of Maltas population now own a mobile phone. A little more than 17 per cent have access to the Internet.

More than 40,000 Maltese households, or 38 per cent, had a desktop computer in 2002 and 31.3 per cent had access to the Internet, a survey conducted by the National Statistics Office shows. But 58.8 per cent of respondents said they did not consider the Internet useful.

But the 15-nation study also found new technologies "posing a challenge to traditional decision-making structures", the UN agency added.
