A new report by a Tibetan group says the Chinese government has built up a network of portals portraying Tibet as a backward but integral part of China, sparking a counter-offensive by independent Tibetan groups for whom the Internet is the only battleground. The report, China's Tibet Online: Tibet and Tibetans in People's Republic China (PRC) Government Websites, has been released at a time when global human rights groups have accused China of imposing restrictions on the use of the Internet in the Asian nation.

In recent years the Chinese government has built a network of portals which provide an insight of Tibet in Chinese terms. A Tibetan group studies these sites and finds that Tibet is depicted as a wilderness, a backward place and an inseparable part of the Chinese nation.
