Koichiro Matsuura announces interim tsunami alert system for the Indian Ocean

UNESCO Director General Koïchiro Matsuura recently announced the process of developing an interim tsunami alert system in the Indian Ocean. The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO. This is announced by the IOC chief in the ongoing Ministerial Meeting on Regional Cooperation on Tsunami Early Warning Arrangements in Phuket, Thailand.

Instead of setting up new warning system, countries should use Tsunami Warning System for the Pacific Ocean, Mr Marsuura said. The proposal of interim warning system can almost be operationlised with the involvement of Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) and the IOC Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC).

To define the scope and characteristics of a global warning system, IOC is convening a technical meeting on March 3 to harmonise the different early warning systems in the Indian Ocean.
